Preimplantation genetic testing
Author: Salome MosidzeAnnotation:
In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a complex series of procedures used to help with fertility or prevent genetic problems and assist with the conception of a child. Preimplantation genetic testing - including preimplantation genetic diagnosis and preimplantation genetic screening. PGD involves testing an embryo before it implants for a specific, known genetic disorder. PGS involves testing an embryo for chromosomal abnormalities. Many embryos with chromosomal abnormalities will not lead to a pregnancy, or will result in a miscarriage. In vitro fertilization (IVF) and preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) are now well-established treatments. Preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) encompasses methods that allow embryos to be tested for severe inherited conditions or for chromosome abnormalities, relevant to embryo health and viability. In order to obtain embryonic genetic material for analysis, a biopsy is required, involving the removal of one or more cells. This invasive procedure has been concerns that embryo viability could be compromised in some cases. Noninvasive preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidy in spent medium may be more reliable than trophectoderm biopsy. According to the legislation of Georgia, sex selection is allowed only with medical evidence, in case there is a risk of transmission of sex-linked genetic diseases.
