Radioactive Element Thorium and its Mineralization in Shkhara Granitoid Massif

Author: Rabi Gabrielashvili
Keywords: Thorium mineralization, Shkhara pluton, Shkhara massif
Annotation:

Shkhara Th and U occurrence was discovered in 2020 by our team in the headwaters of Enguri river, in Late Variscan granitoid pluton. During the fieldwork, anomalously high background radiation was observed in biotite-plagiogranite vein of this pluton, along with the Main Caucasus Thrust. In this rock radiation varies from 1 to 3 μSv/h. Normal background radiation is 0,15 μSv/h. Latest fieldworks has shown that not just biotite-plagiogranite In the Shkhara pluton, but, also biotite-plagiomigmatites of Shkhara massif includes anomalously high radiation. This is indisputable proof that in Shkhara massif there is a large-scale mineralization of Th and U.
